The 2014 State Arbor Month Celebration will be at Oak Hill Park in St. Louis Park. The event will give families a chance to play with nature, while watching some of the best tree climbers in the state compete at the Minnesota Tree Climbing Championship.

Spring Swap

Get ready for summer with the annual Plant Swap hosted by the city of Plymouth. Members of the community are invited to bring perennials, seeds, tools, pots, books and other garden items to swap with others. After collecting your garden goodies, join the Hennepin County master gardeners for a gardening presentation in the Plymouth Creek Center following the swap. Free. 3:30–6:30 p.m. 763.509.5000; plymouthmn.gov

Home Alone

Feeling unsure about leaving your kids alone during the day for the first time this summer? Prepare them, and ease your own mind with a “Home Alone” workshop hosted by the Plymouth Fire Department. This helpful workshop will teach children ages 8–10 how to respond in the event of an emergency through a variety of safety scenarios and issues led by Plymouth firefighters. Children will work interactively with the firefighters to learn about crime prevention in the home, fire escape plans, severe weather awareness and even Internet safety. Registration encouraged. $5. 6:30–7:30 p.m.

Empty Bowls

Wayzata High School has hosted an Empty Bowls event for the past 20 years. For a suggested donation of $10, patrons will be able to choose a bowl out of nearly 1,000, each handmade by Wayzata students, then enjoy a dinner of steaming soup. Donations benefit Interfaith Outreach and Community Partners in the fight against hunger in the Twin Cities.
