The Plymouth artist is crafting statement jewelry inspired by the colors and textures of nature.

Umbreen Hasan, M.D., is a self-taught artist who started her creative journey after a car accident in 2016. “Even though I’m a physician by training, art came to me naturally and became a powerful outlet for healing and self-expression,” Hasan says. While she first ventured into painting with acryllics and alcohol inks, she has recently extended her creative purview into the realm of  jewelry making. “Jewelry making is an extension of my painting, especially since I’ve used gemstones in my artwork before—so transitioning into creating wearable art felt organic and intuitive,” she says.

Hasan describes her jewelry style as bold, unique and deeply rooted in nature. “I incorporate natural elements like raw gemstones, geodes and organic textures to reflect the raw beauty of the Earth,” she says. “I’m constantly inspired by the shapes, colors and patterns found in nature—whether it’s the rugged edges of stones, the flow of branches and vines or the shimmer of minerals.”

We spoke with Hasan to see how her latest creative endeavor is progressing.

Plymouth Magazine: What sparked your interest in jewelry making?

Umbreen Hasan (UH): Since 2017, I’ve been creating fine artwork that uniquely blends painting with embedded jewels. This fusion of art and gemstones sparked my long-time passion for jewelry making. I originally began by incorporating elements of the jewelry-making process into my paintings, which eventually inspired me to create bold, one-of-a-kind statement jewelry pieces.

How did you get started?

UH: I recently went to an art fair looking for statement necklaces that matched the unique vision I had in mind, but I couldn’t find anything that truly resonated with me. That moment sparked the idea that maybe I should try creating them myself.

What materials do you use for your jewelry?

UH: I work with a wide range of materials, but I’m especially drawn to using unique and meaningful elements. I often incorporate Czech crystals, Austrian beads, natural materials and semiprecious gemstones with striking patterns. My signature style is a fusion of metals with raw gemstones and geodes, reflecting my deep inspiration from nature—both in the materials chosen and the organic, Earthy designs I create.

Which type of jewelry has been your favorite to create?

UH: I’ve always been drawn to statement necklaces—they have a powerful way of transforming an outfit and expressing individuality. To me, statement necklaces are not just accessories; they’re the centerpiece, the conversation starter and often the boldest expression of personal style. That’s why I chose to begin my jewelry-making journey with them, creating pieces that reflect both my artistic vision and my love for nature inspired design.

How does your background as a painter inform your approach to jewelry making?

UH: For me, painting and jewelry making are deeply intertwined—they’re both extensions of the same creative process. When I embed gems into my paintings, I’m blurring the line between fine art and wearable art, bringing texture, depth and a tactile quality to the canvas. Whether I’m creating a piece of jewelry or a painting, the use of gemstones and natural elements connects the two forms, allowing me to explore beauty, emotion and nature through different mediums.

Do you have other creative updates since last appearing in our magazine?

UH: Since I was last featured in Plymouth Magazine in 2022, I’ve explored a new and incredibly beautiful medium—cold wax and encaustics. It’s a unique and ancient process, dating back over 3,000 years, and it has opened up an entirely new dimension in my creative work.
