Haskell’s vice president of sales and marketing John Farrell III shares some wisdom for learning about wine. “First, drink what you like. A wine can be very highly priced, or get high ratings from wine critics, but you are the one who has to like it,” says Farrell.
“Try new things. Even if you think, ‘I don’t like chardonnay,’ I’ll bet you have not tried all of the thousands of [chardonnays] from around the world.”
Farrell offers some suggestions for learning through tasting:
- Spanish tempranillos. Farrell enjoys El Jamon tempranillo, about $10.
- Rosés from Croatia, such as Korta Katarina, about $15.
- Cotes du Rhone Villages Domaine d’Aigueville, a blend of grenache, syrah and other grapes. “It has a great flavor with just about anything on the grill!” About $10.
- Casa Farrelli Rosso from Sicily, “a fun wine with great flavor that will go with spicy veggies, simple pastas or on its own.” About $9.
