Ruth Buezis talks about the thing many women don’t talk about: the S-word, Sex. This Plymouth mom says she and her husband of 26 years have a good marriage. But with four daughters, alone time is as hard to find. So Buezis started reading—and praying, and learning, and, finally, teaching.
“Society today tells us that only young, hot, skinny people who aren’t married have sex,” Buezis says. “But God gave us this powerful thing to bind married couples together. If we don’t embrace it, we miss out on that gift.”
In 2012, she started offering a six-week class for women on her own front porch and called it Becoming a Sexually Confident, Godly Wife. To date more than 100 women have come to laugh, learn and discover what it means to be a godly, sensuous partner. The class explores how to incorporate fun and adventure into participants’ sex lives.
As Buezis deepened her own marriage, she began to understand the importance of making quality time in any relationship—and that doesn’t necessarily mean going out on a date. “Instead of going to a movie, put the kids to bed early and have a date at home,” Buezis suggests. “Light a couple of candles, and open a bottle of wine. We need to be more intentional in our marriages—and our life.”
When Buezis isn’t teaching at church or spending time with her husband and four daughters, she’s (are you ready for this?) snowboarding. This 49-year-old taught herself to snowboard on the bunny hill and has since taught her whole family the sport. During winter months, she instructs at Hyland Hills in Bloomington.
“It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever learned,” Buezis says with a laugh. “I was so beat up and sore when I first started. But, I’ve learned that I have to be proactive to stay in shape, and this is one way to do it.”
Buezis says she owes her guts and small successes to those who’ve given her a chance, something she hopes to impart on both her daughters and her class participants. “There have been people in my life who have given me a chance,” she explains. “Somebody had the confidence to believe in me, and I want to do the same for others.”
Buezis recently began teaching this class at Plymouth Covenant Church. For more information, visit her website at christiansexclass.org
